Traditional Japanese matcha bowls are known as chawan. Traditionally, chawan are hand made. Their uneven edges help to produce the fine foam which ceremonial matcha is known for. Their walls curve inward which serves to retain heat and prevent spillage while vigorously whisking. The bottom of the bowl is also narrow to minimize contact area with the table, further reducing heat loss during tea ceremony.
These bowls are not hand made. They are each uniquely shaped to exhibit all the characteristics you should expect from a quality chawan.
