A traditional ceremonial matcha whisk is known as a chasen. Chasen are made from a single piece of bamboo cut and shaped to be used in tea ceremony. These utensils are ideal for creating the ultrafine surface foam which contributes to the natural sweetness of high grade matcha. Perhaps an electric whisk or milk frother will come along one day to usurp the chasen, but for now it is the reigning king for making real ceremonial matcha.
Make sure to take good care of your chasen by shaking it dry after use, and storing it on a chasen-tate / 茶筅縦 (whisk holder). Holder sold separately.
